Cosmetic Dentistry

teens-smiling resizedCosmetic dentistry includes any procedures intended to correct imperfections in the appearance of the mouth.  Anyone who is unhappy with their smile can have it fixed.  The upper teeth show, usually, only when smiling, while the lower teeth remain hidden. This is reversed when talking, with the upper teeth remaining hidden while the lower teeth show. The color, alignment, and spacing of your teeth all combine to give your smile its appearance.  Any of these characteristics can be repaired and improved  to give you a stunning smile.

We offer a wide variety of cosmetic procedures at Highland Village Dental, all of which are described in detail below:

Whitening

This procedure making teeth whiter, and therefore more attractive.  Our office offers 3 levels of whitening: OTC Alternative, Customized, and In-Office.

OTC Alternative: Treswhite Supreme comes in disposable, easy-to-use trays.  Simply place the tray in your mouth, adjust the inner tray, and wear it for 30-60 minutes, once a day.  It’s that easy.  And it’s easier to use and stronger stronger than supermarket products.  This means it delivers more effective results more quickly.

Customized: The Opalescence Take-Home System works so well because everything about it is customized.  It fits perfectly to your smile.  When we begin with this system, we first take impressions of your teeth and then create a customized tray that comfortably fits your mouth. In addition to these trays, we will provide you with syringes of Opalescence gel.  These contain prescription strength formulations to help whiten your smile each day.

Veneers

Young Man LaughingA veneer is a covering that is placed over the outside (visible area) of the tooth. Veneers are usually only done to the part of the teeth that is visible when talking or smiling.  The procedure can be direct or indirect.  The direct technique usually involves placing composite resin on the outside of the tooth using adhesive.  This method is usually referred to as bonding.

The indirect technique usually involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory.  During the first appointment,  impressions are taken of the teeth, and they are given a temporary covering.  The impressions taken are used to develop custom veneers for your teeth.  In two to three weeks,  the temporary veneers are removed and the new ones are bonded to the teeth.  The laboratory fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic.  They are very aesthetically pleasing.

The advantage of veneers over crowns is that they require much less tooth to be removed.  The procedure of installing them is also less uncomfortable. Veneers are recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth structure remaining, however.
