Bridges

smile8Bridges are one of the treatment options we have available for filling the space created by a missing tooth.  A bridge is formed to look like the missing tooth, and it takes its place in the mouth.  The sides of a bridge use the two adjacent teeth for support.  A bridge replaces the missing tooth, both functionally and cosmetically.

Bridge work is as much an art as it is an exact science.  Bridges can be made using gold alloy, porcelain bonded to metal alloy, or a ceramic material.  The choice of material depends on requirements for strength and wear, as well as aesthetic considerations.

It is important that a missing tooth be replaced as soon as possible.  If not treated, the teeth surrounding the gap will begin to shift inward. Teeth use their neighbors for support, and when one of them goes missing, they start to “fall.”  As this worsens, the bite changes in response.  This can eventually result in problems with the entire jaw.  The surrounding teeth can also deteriorate. Gum disease becomes a serious problem, with the difficulty of treatment increasing as the neglect continues.

A bridge, if installed early enough, can limit the negative consequences of a lost tooth. Please call our office at (972) 966-1163 to schedule your appointment for treatment.
